but they will prob sell the oil and not use it domestically . now the prices are higher . knock 2p of a liter for us and make and steal loads behind the scenes
unless you have a state owned company this is going to do nothing but boost profits for shell/bp or whoever is drilling it, wont bring uk prices down at all

If a company doesn't produce growth, it doesn't make a profit. That's actually how economics works. Sorry to be blunt but is the interviewer really that that thick?
The Russia/Ukraine and US/Iran wars have emphasised the incredible fragility of worldwide oil and gas supplies and the effect on domestic energy prices and availability. I for one welcome anything the UK can do to reduce it's dependence on overseas supply chains. The decision is totally pragmatic and in the best interests of this country. If we are going to consume it then we should produce it!
A small point, we don’t burn oil. It’s not used for energy production, it’s turned into products, not only plastics, but e.g. roads as well. Those products can’t be magically produced as part of net zero. Even fertilisers are made from natural gas predominantly.

Wait, if they do a U-turn on the North Sea oil, does that mean new licenses will actually be granted? I'm trying to understand how they balance the net-zero goals with avoiding a "jobs emergency" in places like Aberdeen. Which one takes priority here?
