Andy Burnham will announce plans for new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea when he becomes prime minister, the BBC has been told. The Labour Party's 2024 manifesto - which the new leader said he w
I couldn't agree more, Sonia. Having a team with real integrity is so important, especially when making decisions that affect our environment and future.

This is getting intense. I'm trying to understand the actual logistics here—how does the US coordinate these strikes so frequently without triggering a full-scale war? Is there some kind of diplomatic line still open behind the scenes, or is it just escalation at this point?
The Rosebank oil field is referred to as the UK"s largest untapped reserve.
It contains 300-500m barrels. The UK uses 475-500m barrels ANNUALLY.
SO IT CONTAINS A YEAR'S SUPPLY.
The Jackdaw gas field, located in the UK's North Sea and operated by Shell, is estimated to contain approximately 58 million to over 200 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe), with some estimates suggesting a lifetime production potential of around 350 million barrels.
Extracting oil and gas from the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields is technologically challenging rather than easy, primarily due to extreme environmental conditions. Both UK North Sea projects are highly complex endeavors.
Specific extraction challenges include:
Rosebank Field: Located about 80 miles west of Shetland, it holds the title of the deepest field ever developed on the UK continental shelf, resting over a kilometre below the surface.
Operations face notoriously harsh Atlantic conditions and high development risks, requiring specialized floating production vessels and infrastructure.
Jackdaw Field: Situated in the Central North Sea, extraction is constrained by high pressures, high temperatures, and complex gas compositions.
The only financial benefit to the UK is the sale of the licence. We don't get any oil or gas, that is sold on the international market. The UK gets no special preference. It is not the UK's oil & gas once it is drilled. It won't lower UK energy bills. 90%+ of proven N.Sea oil reserves are already exhausted. It will be gone in a blink without denting the global shortage.
The media are pathetic. Burnham has not indicated whether he if for or against more drilling, neither has he said who will be in his cabinet. Please stop speculating and broadcasting said speculation as if they are fact.
He ain't drilling for anything. It's a ploy to swing the centre back to Labour.
He'll announce that that will be his promise AFTER the next GE , if they get in.
Carrot/stick.
The planet is on fire and he wants to drill for more oil! Another corrupt politician bought by the fossil fuel industry. Drill baby drill, hey Andy🤬 God help our kids and grandkids... And all lifeforms we share this beautiful planet with.
And who voted for this? That wasn’t in the manifesto. Maybe he should hold a general election to see if that’s what the British public want? After the heat waves and wildfires we have seen in the UK not sure fossil fuels are the answer. He’s going to be an absolute disaster with no mandate to introduce these policies that no one voted for. He is going to increase taxes too and get rid of the triple lock? Sounds like North Korea.
People do not realise how dire the british economy has become. It's tragic , it's big. and it's one of the biggest in the western world. Britain has collapsed, it has failed in growth for best part of 20 years. It's so bad that the average worker puts out the lowest work rate in Europe. Britain needs to stop this gaping wound. It's not ready to completely commit to net zero.

It's a massive step backward for the climate, Cal. Economic gains aren't worth compromising our net-zero targets.

It does feel like a bit of a whirlwind, doesn't it Cal? I can't help but think about how my garden soil is struggling while we're still debating digging deeper into the sea.

Big claims from Andy Burnham here! A massive shift in direction if those drilling plans actually go ahead. Proper game-changer for the North Sea. What do we reckon—is this the right move for the economy, or a step backward? Who's backing him on this one?
I read the peice on the BBC news website....Labour sources have made no decisions on new licenses ...so why report it as though they are going to...no such thing has been decided.
