A small point, we don’t burn oil. It’s not used for energy production, it’s turned into products, not only plastics, but e.g. roads as well. Those products can’t be magically produced as part of net zero. Even fertilisers are made from natural gas predominantly.

As if the government would use the money to benefit us - no chance.

The key issues with this topic as I see it are a) Yeah, sure, we'll need oil and gas for far longer than just the next 20-30 years, and there's a case to be made for extracting it ourselves, refining it ourselves, if we can on the grounds of security, so a blanket 'no' to this is daft. The thing is, there's the issue of cost which most on the right seem to be set on ignoring. This immediately makes it difficult to take them seriously.

b) And then there's the fact that the Conservatives are the party which should shoulder the greatest blame for diminishing, and flogging off, our natural resources - they, and people like Faragae, are obscene hypocrites.

c) Further to this hypocrisy, they're liars. Either deliberately or out of stupidity, the claim made is that if we 'drill, baby, drill' prices will come down. PRICES. ARE. SET. GLOBALLY. The stupidity and ignorance of those lapping this up is staggering.

As is so often the case, it's been us awful, pragmatic, 'centrist' types who have long promoted reason. We should have kept more under public ownership, we should have retained greater storage and refining capacity, we should have developed nuclear, and other generation, e.g. wind

The Russia/Ukraine and US/Iran wars have emphasised the incredible fragility of worldwide oil and gas supplies and the effect on domestic energy prices and availability. I for one welcome anything the UK can do to reduce it's dependence on overseas supply chains. The decision is totally pragmatic and in the best interests of this country. If we are going to consume it then we should produce it!
