I worked there for 4 years in the 90's with Simon Moss the then head warden. We did events and all sorts. It was the best time of my working life. I'm absolutely heartbroken to see this happen 😢😢
Back in the '70s, as a scout, I remember helping with controlled burns on our local heathland. Every year we would gather together with the fire brigade and local farmers to burn off a quarter of the heath to maintain the environment and reduce the fuel load on that sector for the next three years. Meanwhile the un-burned parts provided refuge and continuity to the wild life. We never saw such widespread wild fires... Ever!
One of the best things about this fire is has thinned out the ground growing plants, this time next year after a good soaking it will be flourishing and the whole area will be green again, the wildlife will return and it will be back to normal
This is tragic! I’ve seen this in Australia, but never thought I’d see it in England & Scotland. My heart goes out to all involved. 🇬🇧🇦🇺 It breaks for all the animals & wildlife too. Such a tragic situation.
Many animals and invertebrates will have perished. An absolute tragedy. We have very few intact, valuable wildlife sites left in England. Another one gone. When they are not being concreted over by development they are being burnt down.
