The US Justice Department is facing backlash from press freedom groups, after it was revealed the government secretly asked for the phone records of several journalists from the New York Times.
How come NYT never complain about the way CCP controlling the media under the pretext of national security by arresting journalists who dare to provide hard questions ?
Freedom of expression groups, including the Knight First Amendment Institute, labeled the move an aggressive escalation designed to intimidate the media by targeting family members. The Justice Department defended the action, stating that reporters are not the direct targets, but rather the government employees leaking classified national security information.
I remember the first day of his first term, when he kicked most journalists out of the first press conference because he didn't like them. I was shocked that the whole press corp didn't walk out, and my stomach sank.
It was the first sign of an autocratic takeover. Our only hope is foreign press like the BBC. I don't know how we got here, but the U.S. is on a downward slide and all of our protections have failed us, starting with freedom of the press.
The NYT should subpoena the government phone records.
