ABC News' Jay O'Brien and political contributor Mary Jordan discuss Graham's legacy and President Donald Trump's speech at the senator's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.
Fifty years hence, when the country looks back on Trump as the worst president in our history and the man who brought us closest to losing our democracy - as it slowly sank into a cesspool of bald-faced lies, corruption and authoritarianism - descendants of the Graham clan will cringe in embarrassment that this horrible example of human flaws personified, Donald J. Trump, ever spoke words over the body of their dearly departed.
What a travesty of a president. What a travesty of a memorial.
I didn’t watch his speech but I’m guessing it was a combination of lies, nonsense, and trying to use Graham’s death to his advantage, such as when he baselessly claimed that the fallen soldiers had told him that the war in Iran was justified because “they can’t have a nuke”.
Learning Lindsey Graham is dead while waiting on Mitch is like getting a free appetizer because your meal is late; I’m not mad—nice little amuse bouche.
There is always a tendency to romanticize and praise a person in death. Graham had loved ones who knew him best and who are grieving. I respect that. What I will not do is pretend as though Graham made any sincere effort to get to know Trump and ultimately changed his view of him, human to human. 😳 Far more likely is that Graham saw an opportunity to attach himself to power and he took it. It is also possible that Trump knew something that Graham didn’t want to come out. We will probably never know but it is very unlikely that the relationship between these two men was anything but transactional.

Trump to Netayahu: you sure he is gone?
What a travesty of a president. What a travesty of a memorial.
