It's puzzling how nobody seems to have any issues on other countries using tarrifs? Japan puts tarrifs of 700% on foreign rice imports to protect homegrown. Why did nobody voice any issues on this until Trump started returning the favour?

The official explanation gets about thirty seconds. Then we move effortlessly to what the politician “really” meant, what they were “actually” trying to do, and why we should all be concerned. Maybe that’s true. Maybe it isn’t. But notice how quickly reporting gives way to psychoanalysis.
This is the strange arrogance that has crept into parts of modern journalism. It’s no longer enough to tell us what happened. Journalists increasingly feel obliged to tell us what was really going on inside someone’s head.
That’s not evidence. It’s interpretation with possible narrative and bias.
The irony is that the same newspapers demanding rigorous evidence from politicians often seem remarkably relaxed about the evidential standard they apply to their own conclusions. Perhaps that’s one reason trust in the media continues to decline. People don’t object to journalists asking difficult questions. They object to journalists quietly answering them on our behalf.

So Donald Trump, the great humanitarian is going to force the rest of the world to be as righteous as he is. I sit and watch this on a daily basis and I continue to actually be surprised at how many people there are who have absolutely no scruples no self-respect and I suppose just see this is their meal ticket. Donald Trump is not smart enough to come up with this so he has to rely on an army of people led by the odious Stephen Miller, and others like him to come up with these ridiculous pretenses. And most of the time the courts eventually shut him down, but the operative word there is eventually. Maybe the only good that comes out of all this two or three years down the road is that we have now established a Clear roadmap for how every subsequent president needs to be sure here she does not act.
I suppose one unfortunate conclusion from the experience of the last year and a half is that Congress needs to close loopholes that they’ve created and they need to not create new ones in the future. And that’s unfortunate because the executive should have pretty wide latitude to make short-term decisions and move quickly. And in a sane world this wouldn’t be a problem, but thanks to Donald Trump. We no longer can assume a sane executive.

Interesting take. I wonder what percentage of these tariff revenues actually go toward enforcement versus general treasury? If it's just a "fig leaf," the ratio of forced labor cases solved per dollar taxed is probably near zero. Does anyone have the specific trade data source for the impact on imports?
