Magyar follows the same script Tusk implemented in Poland. They are both subservient to the EU, so will get away with any criminal bahaviour. At least, for now. The reckoning will come once they lose power.
This was just another very one-sided report on Hungary by BBC World Service. I think BBC completely lost its mojo when it comes to balanced reporting. Hungary's new prime minister, Peter Magyar, was methodically built up by deep pocketed foreign intelligence agencies, global oil and media companies. His rallies before the election were so costly that no Hungarian left-wing oligarchs could have even provided the budged for them or anybody in the country for that sake. Partizan, the media company, running on egregious foreign money, featured in the report, built Magyar's image up from the get-go. Magyar took aim at the youngest part of the population, the one that traditionally is not interested in politics, only 10-20% of them vote but they are constantly on Facebook. Magyar and his deep pocketed foreign backers tweaked the Facebook algorithms in such a way that no media close to Orban was allowed to appear on Facebook, interestingly also on YouTube, and this way in this group of the population Magyar and his cronies reached 90% participation!! Basically, some say, it is a North Korean style election result. There are numerous other "tricks" they applied, it'd be hard to list them h
How do you define "populism" obviously Magyar is popular since he has a 3/4 majority he was also a member of Orbans party for years and then had insider information about potential corruption he visited hundreds of villages during his campaign and after 16 years people wanted a change he's only 45 a lawyer energetic but only time will tell how ethical or corrupt he is himself how can you compare him after 3 months to Orban after 16 years how can you compare Hungary to America either? Huge differences.
Prime Ministers of parilamentary systems are too powerful there are no term limits they can be elected over and over again.... Same in Canada with Trudeau the real power is in the PM, they need term limits like the US President's office of 8 years max or some number
Years of EU interference and financial blackmail removed Orban. The same kind of "democracy" that stopped the Romanians electing a president that they wanted. Magyar was an ally of Orban who was turned. The EU immediately rewarded him with an unfreezing of US$18 billion funds. Other nations now stand in the way of the continued Ukrainian proxy war, so no real gain for the EU. And Magyar is much more his own man than they planned for.
That was a lighthearted, but eventually quite shallow summary. Don't want to get into details to much, but even though Orban can be viewed somewhat of a general populist conservative, he was part of a universal tide in the west, there were many critical and unique elements to his success, that only applied to Hungary.
The tidal wave of populism can still upset the mainstream in many european countries, mostly from the right, but possibly from the left as well. The reason, the real reason for that are the detached, and mediocre elites of the west, whom cannot give answers for most of the problems, and fears of ordinary people, let alone solve them. I know a few members of these elites, from all around Europe, including my own family. I never seen so many smart, educated people so stunningly blind and deaf.
Populism is the fever, not the disease. Which, as we all know, can still kill you, so you really should pay attention to the cause of it.
"Conservative populism"?? Oh puh-leez, even Orban himself called it an "illiberal administration" - in effect an overt code for proto-fascism. The complete emasculation of all sorts of rights, the corruption, the opaqueness, the self-serving "policies" was not conservative populism, it was outright far-right grift and greed.
Trump, Putin, Netanyahu etc must be brought down on similar principles! Their own peoples must wake up and see how much they are being hurt by these self-serving "leaders"!
