RIP to that guy who used to post on reddit whenever the V-22 got brought up, mostly correcting people and giving insight.
He ended up dying in one of it's crash's a couple of years back.
Worked on these for 6 years in the Marines, love hate relationship but honestly they’re an amazing piece of machinery and can fulfill a wide range of missions.
I used to work at a compound right next to a test squadron that ran quite a few Ospreys. Big, beautiful birds. Also loud asf. When one would slow fly overhead at like 500 feet, the twin rotors would shake our reinforced building.
Also one time one of their crew chiefs gave me the finger while he halfway out of the aircraft was 500 feet above me for no reason. Didn't know him. Laughed my ass off.
My dad was one of the programming leads at Bell Helicopter for the avionics and flight control systems of the V-22 in the mid-late 90s. Sometime around mid 2000, new management came in and laid him and most of them off, replacing them with their own people.
And they wonder why this thing had teething issues.
Sometimes the title format of "The INSANE Engineering of..." seems a little bit clickbaity, bit on this occasion it is wholly valid. This machine is genuinely insane.
